“To me, it doesn’t make sense if we want to stay in a losing party. He (Muhyiddin) should join a winning party. I don’t know if he will stay (in Umno) or not but I will find it very strange if he stays.
“The Umno controlled government is arresting people here and there, and this is their last lifeline.
“If Umno has a future, it means we have no future,” Zaid told FMT in a joint interview with several news portals.
When asked about criticisms leveled against Muhyiddin, saying he was unable to defend and fight for himself, Zaid stressed that no one should judge a person’s approach on certain issues.
“Everyone has their own approach. Don’t say that Muhyiddin didn’t do anything. He said wait for tomorrow right?
“So we have to be patient. That is his style. But I am confident that he will walk together with (former premier) Tun Mahathir (Mohamad).”
On Monday, Mahathir announced that he and his wife Siti Hasmah Ali were leaving Umno as a sign of protest against Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration.
Muhyiddin on the other hand, was suspended from his position in Umno last Friday.
On July 28 last year, Muhyiddin was dropped from the Cabinet in a reshuffle after his persistent attacks on the Prime Minister and 1MDB.
He is expected to announce his status in Umno at a press conference tomorrow.
