Low Chinese turnout at rally affects T-shirt business

The slightly slower sales of T-shirts and rally paraphernalia at the anti-GST rally yesterday was attributed to the low turnout of Chinese protesters.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Street protests are prime opportunities for enterprising businessmen to make a quick buck (or possibly two thousand ringgit), as the anti-GST rally here yesterday proved.

T-shirt sellers and drink vendors thronged the area outside Dataran Merdeka today along with the thousands of protesters.

Many were selling T-shirts emblazoned with “Mansuh GST” (Abolish GST) and other slogans.

“I’ve sold over two hundred T-shirts in the past few hours,” said a seller who only wanted to be known as Salleh.

He made over RM2000, with each T-shirt selling for RM10.

However, other sellers complained that the surprisingly low turnout of Chinese protesters at the rally affected sales.

“Usually it’s the Chinese who buy our vuvuzelas,” another seller, who did not wish to be named, said.

“Business is really slow today. Maybe because they’re observing Cheng Beng,” he said, referring to the Chinese occasion in which families visit the graves of their deceased relatives.

The drinks business was extremely brisk however due to the sweltering heat with one vendor making around RM300, selling each drink from between RM2 to RM4.

Competition was stiff admittedly with at least ten drink vendors sighted in the area.
