As an introduction to the service, GrabCar is offering two free rides (worth RM25 each) for all users from George Town to the Penang International Airport from today until June 7.
Users can claim the free rides using the promo code: “Hellograbcar”
For other rides, fares begin at RM1, followed by charges at RM1.30 per km. There is no time-based fare.
However, a RM5 minimum payment is pegged for all GrabCar rides.
The service is available on the island and mainland, up to Kulim.
Grab Malaysia Country Manager Jaygan Fu said the rates ensure that passengers pay a fixed fare through cash or credit card, regardless of traffic conditions.
“Our social mission is to not only provide safe and reliable alternative options of transportation.
“The fares are set for long-term gains to ensure both drivers and passengers are happy.
“We provide drivers with trip-based incentives. We don’t sacrifice our partners for short-term gains,” he said at a press conference at the Farquhar Mansion here today.
GrabCar was first introduced in the Klang Valley in 2014 and expanded to Johor Bahru last month.
Meanwhile, Fu said Penang presented an economic opportunity in the northern region of Malaysia.
He said Grab wanted to tap into a market such as Penang, which is not a stranger to ride hailing apps.
On another note, Fu said Grab was working with transportation regulators to work on legalities and possible taxation in the future.
“We work really well with the government and we are in the midst of discussing what is best for all parties,” he said.
Fu also said GrabCar not only leveraged on the same aspects as MyTeksi (now known as Grab) but also had added features.
The Grab app also features round-the-clock customer service, a button to call the nearest police operations centre and location sharing via GPS.
