KUALA LUMPUR:
There are 290,437 stateless children in Malaysia who are below the age of 18, according to Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, was responding to N Surendran (PKR-Padang Serai), who asked for the breakdown of children between the ages of one and 18, who were born in Malaysia but do not have Malaysian citizenship and the breakdown according to racial lines.

“There are 290,437 children who are between one and 18 years old who were born in Malaysia but not have Malaysian citizenship,” said Zahid.

He, however, said the race of the stateless children was not included as they were categorised based on their parents’ country of origin.

He said this to a supplementary question by Surendran on the racial breakdown of the stateless children.

“The bulk of these stateless children have parents from Indonesia, Philippines and Myanmar,” he said.

Last week, it was reported that cases involving stateless people in Sarawak will be taken up by a task force set up to address the issue.

Sarawak 4 Sarawakians chief Peter John Jaban stated this in a joint statement with the Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia).

Instead of waiting two years for an application to be processed by Putrajaya, he hoped these cases would be solved within a month through the task force.
