SINGAPORE: The trial of former BSI banker Yeo Jiawei, charged with four counts of witness-tampering in a money-laundering investigation linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) began this afternoon.

Yeo, 33, is accused of facilitating illicit transactions involving 1MDB that led to the shutdown of Swiss private bank BSI’s operations here. He faces a total of 11 charges ranging from money laundering and cheating to forgery and obstruction of justice.

The trial on the four charges is set to run through Nov 11 with District Judge Ng Peng Hong presiding, the Singapore Straits Times reported.

Prosecutors earlier said Yeo tampered with at least five witnesses on at least five occasions, including asking one to destroy evidence.

Besides Yeo, two other former BSI employees are also facing charges. On Oct 10, Yak Yew Chee and Yvonne Seah, were charged with carrying out suspicious money transfers for their client Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low.

Philip Fong of the law firm of Harry Elias is representing Yeo.
