Chin Swee Chung, 46, raped the 35-year-old Myanmar woman twice in five hours in December 2013 while his wife was away on holiday with their children, the court found.
According to a report in Today Online, High Court judge Chan Seng Onn said during sentencing: “What you did was reprehensible. You’ve raped your own maid twice and in the course of (a) night.”
Chin, an alcohol distributor, first raped the 35-year-old married woman after returning from a drinking session at around 2.40am on Dec 20, 2013. He then forced himself upon her again less than five hours later.
During his seven-day trial, Chin had argued that the maid had consented to the sex.
Chin intends to appeal against his conviction and sentence, and has been granted bail of S$70,000, Today Online reported.
Chin’s wife divorced him within three months of his crime, while the domestic helper has since returned to her home country, the report said.
The court was told that the victim started working for Chin’s family in July that year. When the rapes were committed, Chin’s wife and two children were on holiday in Hong Kong, while his mother, who lives with them, was also abroad.
On Dec 20, Chin had returned to their Pasir Ris flat tipsy and about 2.40am, called out to the victim outside her room. When she emerged, he pulled her into the master bedroom and raped her.
The maid tried phoning a compatriot working in Singapore but failed to get him. She texted him and cried the whole night. Then, about 6am, she decided to do the laundry.
About an hour later, Chin woke up, went to her in the kitchen, and pulled her into the master bedroom again and raped her, according to the Today Online report.
A couple of hours later, Chin gave her S$30 to buy groceries before he left for work. She quickly called her friend again and told him that her life had been “destroyed”. He told her to call the police and she did.
