PETALING JAYA: PKR’s R Sivarasa has dismissed claims he gave a speech or any form of “ceramah” at the Masjid An-Nur Kampung Melayu either in his personal capacity or as a representative of Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, Berita Harian reported today.

Referring to reports and photos of him speaking in the premises of the mosque, which had gone viral, the Subang MP said he was merely present at the mosque to hand over a RM71,000 donation to the surau and mosques in his constituency.

“I only came to the mosque after being informed about the handing over of the contribution by the Kota Damansara state constituency coordinator’s office.

“I then spoke for a short while, after being invited to do so, just to offer a Ramadan greeting to all present, and to share a bit of my experience in visiting suraus and mosques in the constituency since becoming Subang MP in 2008,” Sivarasa told the Malay daily in a WhatsApp message, adding that his presence was misunderstood by some quarters.

It was reported yesterday that the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, was upset with the action of Sivarasa, for allegedly entering the mosque and delivering a speech there last week.

This was relayed to the media by Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director Haris Kasim, who said he was informed about the matter by the sultan’s private secretary, Munir Bani.

The management of the mosque where Sivarasa had spoken was summoned by Jais last Friday to provide details on the incident. An investigation paper has been submitted to the Selangor palace.

The incident occurred on May 24 when Sivarasa was said to have entered the mosque as a representative of Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali and addressed those present there.

Sivarasa said his constituency coordinator Radzlan Jalaludin had spoken first before inviting him to say a few words as well.

“My only reason for being there was as the Subang MP, who had been elected by a majority of Muslim and non-Muslim voters. I was not there on behalf of the menteri besar as claimed by certain people who have clearly misunderstood the facts in this matter,” he was quoted as saying by BH.

Sivarasa also said he was confident that this matter has already been explained accordingly by the mosque management to Jais, referring to the meeting between both parties last Friday.
