PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar wants the opposition to undertake a course of action to salvage assets allegedly linked to 1MDB in the US and improve Malaysia’s reputation in the international arena.

The Lembah Pantai MP said the country’s image had taken a beating following the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) move to escalate its probe on the assets into a criminal investigation.

She said it was important for Pakatan Harapan to win the upcoming general election to be “in control”, so that assets in the US allegedly related to the company, which comes under the federal government, can be saved.

“We want to take back the assets. Do not forget that these assets have been seized (by the DoJ),” she said.

“We will bring this issue to all the people, for them to be told the real story at every trip that we make,” she said today.

She also said those who were responsible for the state of affairs in 1MDB must be brought to book.

“Why protect them? I do not understand. Why should they be protected?” she said, adding that the country may be at risk of losing much of its finances if the situation at 1MDB was not rectified.

She also said she was disappointed with Prime Minister Najib Razak for allowing the country to sink into such a state.

“It shows what we feared all along, the warnings that we gave to save the funds and also Malaysia’s good name, were not without basis,” she said, adding that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim had the same concerns too in 2010.

Nurul said this after the launch of Spera, an election data management system mobile application, here.

She said the application assists voters to check on their status in the electoral roll, and to obtain the latest information about their constituencies as well as the data of new voters.

She said the application developed by Institut Darul Ehsan would help make the electoral system cleaner and fairer.

It was reported on Thursday that the DoJ had put on hold civil forfeiture lawsuits against Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, after the agency escalated its probe into a criminal investigation on money allegedly embezzled from 1MDB to buy real estate and other assets amounting to more than US$1 billion (RM4.3 billion).

DoJ officials were reported as saying that pursuing the agency’s current forfeiture lawsuits might have “an adverse effect” on its ability to conduct the criminal investigation.

Its investigations involved efforts to track down how much of the money raised by 1MDB for development projects, was used to purchase various assets including luxury real estate, art, film productions, a luxury yacht, a private jet and more.
