GEORGE TOWN: A Penang executive councillor has revealed that only 1,332 units of the 1Malaysia People’s’ Housing Scheme (PR1MA) have been built in the country up to August this year, against 625,000 units announced by the federal government since 2013.

State Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the completed units were a far cry from the number announced by the prime minister since Budget 2013.

He said since the passage of the PR1MA Act in 2012, and from the 2013 Budget until the 2018 Budget, a total of 625,000 PR1MA homes were promised.

“A typical apartment would take about 36 months to build, so going by the timeline of announcements, a significant number of that 625,000 units announced should have been built.

“It has been five years now, and a meagre 1,332 have been built. We find it shocking and saddening, especially when Penangites have not been given even a single unit of PR1MA home.

“There is no point making announcement after announcement. What is crucial is delivery and execution,” Jagdeep said at a press conference in Komtar today.

Jagdeep referred to a parliamentary reply in August by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim, who revealed that to date a total of 1,332 PR1MA homes were built in Putrajaya, Kuala Ketil and Sungai Petani 2 in Kedah.

Shahidan was replying to a question by Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.

Jagdeep has compiled the PM’s Budget speeches from 2013 to Budget 2018, which showed the premier announcing a total of 625,000 PR1MA homes.

According to Jagdeep’s research, a total of 50,000 units were announced in the 2013 Budget, 80,000 (2014), 80,000 (2015), 175,000 (2016), 30,000 (2017) and 210,000 in the 2018 Budget.

Jagdeep said in comparison, the Penang government had facilitated the completion of 20,887 affordable home units with certificate of completion and compliance (CCC) and handover of keys at the end of 2016.

He said 17 more affordable housing projects had been proposed, five of which were works in progress, promising 27,230 units.
