DAP Johor leaders urge Segamat locals to submit their objections to the Election Commision over registered army voters at an incomplete army base.

KUALA LUMPUR:
DAP wants the Election Commission (EC) and the relevant ministers to come clean over claims that army personnel voters are being registered to a base in Johor which is still under construction.

Mengkibol assemblyman Tan Hong Pin said the Segamat army base was scheduled to be completed in April 2018, but that 1,051 army voters had been newly registered in the constituency.

He called on Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to explain why these personnel were being registered there despite the incomplete status of the base.

“We in DAP would like to urge the people in Segamat to help us object to the army personnel’s voter registration.

“We have until Nov 6 to submit the objections to the EC,” he said during a press conference at the DAP headquarters here.

DAP also called for donations from members of the public to help fund the objections, which cost RM10 each.

If the objection is rejected by the EC, a maximum of RM200 is required to be paid per person.

Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong said the issue was of national significance as the army camp was being built to ensure a Barisan Nasional (BN) victory.

He said there were other camps being built in Johor for electoral purposes, adding that there was proof of this in the Segamat case.

“The voters have shifted into the constituency of Segamat. Before the construction of the camp is completed, they are being shifted into the constituency of MIC president S Subramaniam.

“I want Subramaniam, the health minister, to elaborate on this. Is the MIC president so weak that he needs to rely on phantom voters to win the seat?

“This is a clear case where we want action to be taken. BN is prepared to play dirty.”

On a separate issue, Tan said he had found that 218 army personnel from the base in Majidee were still registered there despite the camp being closed down three years ago and sold off to a private company.

“The camp has moved to Batu Pahat, but still half the battalion is voting in Majidee.

“If the camp is no longer there, where is the EC supposed to open its booth for the army personnel to vote?” he asked.

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low should get to the bottom of both issues in Segamat and Majidee.

He added that it was time for Low, who formed the National Integrity and Good Governance Department, to step up and prove himself by handling the matter.

Those who wish to donate towards the objections in Segamat can contact DAP at 012-438 9488 for further information.
