KOTA KINABALU: Barisan Nasional’s Upko has attracted attention of youths aged 18-30 through its Komulakan wing.

The party will consider nominating them as candidates in the coming 14th general election.

Acting president Wilfred Madius Tangau said the Upko Komulakan was aimed at creating a pool of leaders and has about 20,000 members in the country.

“As Upko sets its sail towards the new year, we are glad our policy of training young leaders has been a great success,” he said.

Speaking at the meet-the-people session organised by the Tambulaong Upko Komulakan at the village community hall here on New Year’s Eve, Tangau said the Komulakan had present and future leaders.

He said Upko wanted them to understand the policies of the government.

“We want them to be innovators,” said the science, technology and innovation minister.

He was heartened to note that the Komulakan wing was gaining traction as more youths joined in.

“The younger generation is becoming more interested in becoming a part of the nation-building process. And they want to do it through Upko,” he said.

He believed the time was ripe for those from the Youth and Wanita wings to be candidates in the coming election.
