Woman jumps from Penang bridge, man goes to her rescue

GEORGE TOWN: A woman who jumped off the second Penang Bridge here this morning was rescued by an auxiliary policeman with the help of several passing fishermen.

In the incident which took place at 11.13am, the woman parked her Toyota Avanza at KM9.9 of the island-bound stretch. She was seen standing on the ledge before leaping into the sea.

An auxiliary policeman, who was alerted, went to her rescue. He saw the woman clinging to a pillar and used a tow-line to rappel down the pillar and grab her.

According to police, the man waited a good 20 minutes in the waters, dragged by strong currents, before several fishermen arrived in their boat.

The incident was recorded on one of the fishermen’s phones.

The woman was later brought to a nearby jetty where she received immediate attention from a fire and rescue paramedic team.

According to a Penang Fire Department official, she is in stable condition and will be brought to hospital for further checks.
