Sabah gets new government, but Shafie says it’s not over yet

KOTA KINABALU:
Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) has refused to throw in the towel despite the swearing in of Musa Aman as the Sabah chief minister and a new state government in place.

Its president Shafie Apdal said Warisan and its partner Pakatan Harapan (PH) were looking at a number of options to challenge the state election results, citing a clear breach of polling rules by Barisan Nasional (BN) and election officials themselves.

“It’s (the election results are) already announced, but we can still do that (dispute). There’s more to it (and) there are so many avenues.

“How can we concede? Because (many of our) Borang 14 were not signed,” he said, referring to the election result forms. “You know very well under the law those forms should be signed by the returning officer.”

Speaking to reporters outside his house yesterday, Shafie added that the new government would not be sustainable.

“I’m very sure what’s happening in Sabah has been experienced before,” he said.

He also claimed that “mysterious” additional ballot boxes had been brought to a number of counting centres, for example in Sabah’s interior Kemabong where, he contended, Warisan had initially won.

“The count at the district polling centres indicated we had already won. All of a sudden three boxes came in… how many postal votes can there be in the interior?

“I don’t want to accuse anyone, but it is widely known by the people that the Borang 14 (were not signed) and mysterious additional ballot boxes (were added).”

Shafie also alleged there had been “buying” of people.

“From day one, all the buying in the pondok-pondok (tents) under the heat… this is very blatant. The Election Commission (EC) was supposed to be unbiased.

“My poster was torn down in Tawau but how can (former prime minister) Najib (Razak’s) picture be shown there? I’m the president of a party contesting in Sabah and I can’t show my picture?” he said.

He added that he was in constant communication with new Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad during the duration of the polling period and that the latter had also complained of the same Borang 14 issue.

On the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) which quit BN yesterday, Shafie said he was also in constant touch with its acting president Wilfred Madius Tangau on Upko’s possible pact with Warisan.

“But what is clear cut is we are with DAP and PKR (of PH).”

Shafie claimed the five Upko assemblymen, who denied they had joined their president in working with Warisan, were being kept from joining Tangau.

“You know well it’s a house arrest… why should we kidnap?” he said, referring to fears from BN that Warisan and PH might persuade BN elected representatives to join them.

He also claimed that there were in fact attempts to buy off winning candidates from the Warisan-PH pact.

“Some of them were called… one or two (people)… but I’m not worried because we are there for the people’s struggle. Our members are very intact… I’m quite sure with Tun Mahathir on top there,” he said.
