The project is a joint venture between SMH Rail and Hyderabad-based Medha Servo, with the 40 coaches expected to be delivered within the next two years.
The additional monorail cars are expected to improve the MMRDA’s service frequency and ridership, giving riders a five-minute headway.
The cars will be lighter thanks to the innovative technology built into its design, decreasing the load on the guideway and piers while giving the coaches an increased 10% capacity.
MMH Rail is the leading locomotive manufacturer in Malaysia, known globally for collaborating with Siemens AG and the Hyundai-Rotem Company.
The company also manufactured and delivered 428 cars for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) projects for the Sungai Buloh-Kajang and Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya lines, completing this ahead of schedule.
“The emergence of SMH Rail as a global player is the result of the Malaysian government’s procurement policy under the Industrial Collaboration Program (ICP), championed by the Technology Depository Agency (TDA) under the finance ministry,” said Sharoul Jambari, CEO of Malaysia’s TDA.
MMH Rail said that as a beneficiary of the ICP, it received technology transfer and dynamic capabilities development alongside its international OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partners.
“Through the ICP, SMH Rail was able to expand its supply chain base, which included more than 100 local vendors, to provide services and supply of parts,” it said in a statement.
“The Mumbai Monorail project demonstrates the successful implementation of the ICP that provided leverage for SMH Rail to expand its exportability by offering a level playing field in the rapidly growing global rail transport market.”
