The Kerian solar power plant will generate 212Gwh of energy per year.

PETALING JAYA:
A new solar farm began operations early this month, taking Malaysia another step forward in the quest to reach the target of generating at least 20% of its energy through the use of renewables by 2025.

The solar farm, located in Kerian district in Perak, has a capacity of 100mw and is able to supply more than 212GWh of power per year to the national grid.

This is equivalent to eliminating the annual carbon emission of 11,800 Malaysian households, a statement from Engie South East Asia said in a statement issued today.

The Kerian solar power project was developed by Kerian Solar, a special purpose company formed by a joint-venture between Malaysian solar developer TTL Energy Sdn Bhd and Engie.

The solar farm began operations on Aug 5, 22 months after construction began in October 2020.

Kerian Solar was awarded the project by the Energy Commission of Malaysia under the third round of the country’s large-scale solar tender in 2019.

The financing for the project came from a consortium comprising BNP Paribas Malaysia Bhd, MUFG Bank (M) Bhd and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Malaysia Bhd.

Kerian Solar has also won a 21-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to sell CO2 emission-free electricity generated by its solar photovoltaic energy plant.
