Top banker and former EPF boss Azlan Zainol dies

The Malaysia Building Society Berhad chairman had earlier served 12 years as CEO of EPF and helped EPF recover after the Asian financial crisis.

Azlan Zainol, the chairman of Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB) and MBSB Bank Bhd, died this evening. He was 72.

His death was confirmed in a Facebook post by MBSB Bank. Azlan died at 2.40pm.

Meanwhile, MalaysiaGazette reported that Azlan would be buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery tomorrow.

Azlan, a well-known corporate figure, was the former group chairman of RHB Bank, managing director of AmBank Bhd and a former director of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

The Edge reported that he also served as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) CEO for 12 years from 2001.

Azlan, the financial daily reported, helped with EPF’s recovery following the Asian financial crisis, with “dividend payout reaching a 13-year high of 6.15% in 2012 before his exit”.

He resigned as 1MBD director on Jan 11, 2010, following revelations of mismanagement at the state investment arm.

Azlan is survived by his wife, Laili Hassan, and four children.
