Rafizi said the idea was jointly mooted by the Johor, federal and Singapore governments at a meeting between the three parties. However, it had yet to be turned into an official proposal.
“I believe it is the right time to start the discussion formally,” he told reporters after attending an engagement session on the 12th Malaysia Plan’s (12MP) mid-term review at the Iskandar Puteri city council here today.
However, Rafizi said the proposal would have to be raised at the Cabinet meeting first before being brought to the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia’s (JMCIM) annual meeting, which is expected to be held in mid-July.
During a dialogue session earlier, Rafizi said Johor would continue to be one of the biggest drivers of the country’s economy, given its potential and strategic position in the region.
He said Johor had the potential to be the biggest beneficiary of the country’s focus on transitioning to renewable energy, especially given its proximity to Singapore.
The minister said this would be supported by the government’s move to lift its ban on renewable energy exports.
Rafizi added that Pengerang would not only be a chemical and petrochemical centre but also a pioneer in ammonia and hydrogen energy.
