He takes over from interim chairman Shahrol Anuwar Sarman, who has been redesignated as a non-independent and non-executive director, the plantation group said in a Bursa Malaysia filing.
Rastam served as the ministry’s top civil servant from 2006 to 2010. On his retirement, he was appointed special envoy of the Malaysian government to Brunei.
He also served as adviser at the Sarawak chief minister’s department for three years (2010-2013) and sat on the boards of several companies.
Rastam also served as chairman and CEO of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia from 2015 to 2020.
He was an adjunct professor at the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University Malaysia, from 2021-2022.
