Malaysian National Cycling Federation deputy president Amarjit Singh Gill confirmed this in a statement, citing Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) publication on the track cycling quota for each of the national Olympic committees concerned.
“We are very pleased with the composition of the track team in Paris with Azizulhasni Awang and Shah Firdaus Sahrom in the keirin and sprint events and Nurul Izzah Izzati Asri making her debut in both keirin and sprint as well, in the biggest sporting event in the world,” he said.
Amarjit also said that Nur Aisyah Zubir had become the first female Malaysian cyclist to qualify for the road event.
Last Monday, Amarjit, who is also a UCI management committee member, revealed that unofficially, Malaysia had three athletes who had qualified for the track event based on the points and rankings published following the final round of the UCI Track Nations Cup in Milton, Canada.
Today, he said that the track team had a detailed plan set out for the next three months with training to be held at the Nilai Velodrome.
The trio will then travel to Europe for a short stint before heading for the track events in Paris, which will run from Aug 6 to 11.
