GEORGE TOWN:
A Penang woman has done more in five years than what others struggle to achieve in a lifetime: she has obtained 40 professional certifications while being a mother and social activist at the same time.

Even the Covid-19 lockdown didn’t stop her as Priscilla Prasena, 37, completed nearly 10 courses online.

Today, she has over 40 professional certifications in the field of data science, Lean Six Sigma, project management, Internet of Things and a host of others, on top of a degree in corporate communications and an MBA (master’s degree in business administration).

In recognition of her achievements, she has been awarded a place in the Malaysia Book of Records for the “most number of professional certification by an individual”.

Priscilla told FMT: “Degrees alone don’t work, but professional certifications carry more weight, as employers hunt for certain skills.

“The certifications have allowed me to be a subject matter expert in various disciplines, it allows a bird’s eye view in operations and decision making.”

Priscilla, who’s a mother of one, is currently a part-time trainer as well as a social activist. She previously held management roles in a German multinational corporation and was a journalist with FMT for close to two years.

In explaining how she managed to get 40 professional certifications, she said it was “pure curiosity” and the interest of finding out how things work.

“Whenever my company offers staff an opportunity to take up professional courses, I will take up almost everything being offered,” she said, saying she has spent close to RM100,000 on her 40 courses to date.

Priscilla said given the current economic situation, more people should consider upskilling themselves. She also said that equipping oneself with industry-relevant skills was important.

“It is in challenging times like this that one has to add value to their skill set and knowledge. When we embrace change and learn new skills, there’s no limit to how much you can grow.”
