KUALA LUMPUR:
The current movement control order (MCO) enforced in many states throughout the country is unfortunate but necessary in the light of the escalating number of Covid-19 cases.

Malaysian food culture, just like other aspects of everyday life, has also been adversely affected with many unable to dine at their favourite restaurants.

For the most part, people are stuck at home, mostly cooking their own meals or having food delivered from restaurants struggling to make ends’ meet.

But just because the national mood may be somewhat dour does not mean you can’t treat yourself to good food every once in a while during these trying times.

And that’s exactly what Jhann, a Bukit Damansara hotspot aims to do, by providing hungry Malaysians with delicious Northern Indian cuisine.

And it’s not classic North Indian Mughal style food that you can find here, mind you, but rather experimental, progressive North Indian food.

Opened in August 2019, Jhann has gained a reputation for its chic and modern interior. (Photo: Ahmad Sadiq @ FMT Lifestyle)

In August 2019, Jhann threw open its doors, acquiring quite the following in the surrounding neighbourhood, for its chic ambiance and unique offerings.

But with the MCO in place, the luxury of visiting and dining in is simply not available.

No need to fret, however, as the restaurant has come up with a delivery menu lovingly dubbed the “Take Me Home Menu”.

And what’s on this menu that’s worth trying out? Everything, really, but there’s no harm in savouring each dish one at a time.

What would Indian food be without a choice of rice or naan?

Jhann’s Pulau Rice is a dish made with long-grain rice, and a pinch of spices thrown in together with green peas. This perfect blend of ingredients creates a tasteful rice dish perfect with any rich curry.

If you happen to be calorie-conscious, there is also the healthy option of cauliflower rice on the menu. Crunchy and with a nutty undertone, this dish expertly replaces high-carb rice with something more nutritious.

If naan is your thing, then Jhann has quite the variety for you.

Two must-try naan options would be the garlic naan and the cheese naan, and it must be said that both should be eaten while still piping hot for maximum enjoyment.

Soft and fluffy, the former has the flavour of garlic infused into every inch of the flatbread that you can smell from a mile away.

The cheese naan, on the other hand, is a love letter to cheese aficionados, with the distinct taste of cheese in every bite you take.

Love seafood? The Fish Tikka should be right up your alley. This dish showcases fresh white mackerel cooked to perfection in an actual tandoori oven.

It serves as an elegant appetiser as well, with a hint of lemon that complements each flavourful chunk of flesh.

The Spiced Tiger Prawn Masala is also a must-try. Both the large tiger prawns and the masala are packed with spicy and bold flavours, making them perfect candidates to be enjoyed with rice.

The Kerala Fish Curry may seem a little out of place on the menu of a Northern Indian restaurant, given its southern heritage. All the same this truly special dish seems right at home with the others on the menu.

A spicy and creamy offering with curry leaves and coconut milk, the pieces of fish within are cooked just right, resulting in a rich and delicious dish that is truly unforgettable.

The Minced Lamb Keema is another memorable offering here. This appetiser is served on a single leaf of lettuce, expertly playing the spicy and flavourful curry off against the light and refreshing greens.

Want something with a hint of sweetness to grace your taste buds? If so, the Butter Chicken with its thick and creamy gravy should be able to sate your appetite.

And no Indian restaurant would be complete without a tandoori chicken, and Jhann’s Tandoor Grilled Chicken Back Quarter is done to perfection.

The flavourful and tender chicken is served together with dips of cooling mint chutney and sweet, tangy mango chutney, but it is not wrong to say that the chicken can be perfectly eaten on its own.

While you may not be able to enjoy the experience of dining in Jhann during the MCO period, you can still very much enjoy the delicacies served straight out of its kitchen in the comfort of your own home. Jhann will be open for takeaways and deliveries starting from Jan 20.
