Over the course of almost one year, the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination has gone through repeated postponement due to Covid-19.
Recent updates have announced that 2020’s SPM will begin on February 22, 2021, roughly a month from now.
As parents, it can be concerning to witness the whirlwind of your child’s SPM preparations. Candidates have been sporadically in and out of the classroom, and switching between online learning and face-to-face classes.
It is unsurprising that candidates have been vocal about their difficulties and dissatisfaction.
Here’s how you, as parents, can help facilitate your child’s preparations.
SPM trial papers
Encourage your child to do SPM exercises with trial papers. Trial papers can help candidates familiarise themselves with each exam format and the types of questions that may come out.
It is also an effective way to help your child gain confidence in answering each subject, as candidates can browse through and analyse the model answers to obtain maximum marks.

SPM past year questions
Past year questions have always been excellent practise for SPM candidates, as it helps candidates to identify important topics to focus and study on.
Your child can use past year questions to identify specific patterns, such as how frequently various questions come out, and when was the last time-specific questions were asked.
Doing so allows students to estimate the probability of similar questions appearing in the upcoming exam.
Students will then be able to utilise their time and energy revising on popular and relevant topics instead of rushing through the entire syllabus.
Focus on specific stream subjects
Getting straight As is great but what if your child has generally performed poorly across the multiple subjects?
One strategy worth considering is encouraging your child to focus on specific subjects based on their stream.
If candidates are from the science stream, they must focus their energy and time to score in Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
On the other hand, art stream students must score As for Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Science, Sejarah and Pendidikan Islam or Pendidikan Moral.
By acing these listed subjects, candidates will obtain the necessary merits required to qualify for the Unit Pengambilan Universiti (UPU) applications.
These three strategies are guaranteed ways to prepare your children for SPM 2020. Additionally, you may also refer to SPM Spot Questions 2020, meticulously curated by dedicated teachers with over 20 years of experience.
