PETALING JAYA:
EQ Kuala Lumpur, a five-star establishment on Jalan Sultan Ismail, has played host to dignitaries, celebrities, and families for five decades now. Having been demolished and rebuilt from the ground up in 2012, it opened its doors to the public right before the pandemic.

No detail was spared in the RM1 billion redevelopment, as each guest who steps through the hotel’s doors will be whisked away into a world of charm and luxury. Spanning 52 floors, you will be greeted by metal sculptures at the entrance, salvaged from the older building.

All rooms have an amazing view of the KL skyline, with part of the building occupied by commercial and office tenants. This lends a buzz of energy no matter the time of day.

Stepping into the lobby, you will walk intuitively to the reception area. The tall ceiling exudes a sense of modern grandeur, and check-in is swift.

As you’re directed to the elevators with your luggage attended to by the bellboy, you’ll know your stay is going to be a good one, whether for business or leisure.

Each room is equipped with a proper coffee maker to help you get your caffeine fix, plus complimentary drinks in the fridge. Local delights like tapioca chips with salted egg yolk and banana chips also lend a Malaysian feel.

The room is modern with plush pillows and a large, comfortable bed that will make you feel as though you were sleeping on clouds.

There are power points on either side, so you can wake up to a fully charged phone. Others are located at the desk area should you have more devices you need to charge.

The lavishly appointed bathroom makes it easy to wash away the day’s cares when you step under the rain shower. Malaysians love powerful water pressure, and you will not find EQ wanting in this department.

Premium Balmain toiletries ensure you step out clean and refreshed.

For those who want a more exclusive experience, it is highly recommended you book a room with Equator Club lounge access. Nestled on the 51st floor, you get to enjoy a commanding view of the city regardless of the time of day.

Your check-in and check-out process is also attended to on this level. This is an enclave where you will get to enjoy your breakfast in private without the hustle and bustle of a regular buffet.

At the Equator Club, you can indulge in barista-made coffee, snacks, and other non-alcoholic beverages all day long. Complimentary afternoon tea is served in the afternoons to tide you over before dinner.

If these aren’t enough, you can always savour the canapes and finger foods that mark the evening cocktail hour, along with the poison of your choice.

The breakfast-buffet spread at Nipah offers more than enough to help you get started on a high note, offering Asian and western cuisines that will leave you spoilt for choice.

Floor staff will offer freshly baked pastries from table to table for a more personal touch, while self-service hot beverages are further available from strategically placed machines around the restaurant.

You will not find EQ short of other dining options if Nipah does not suit your needs. Kampachi, for instance, has been known for decades for excellent Japanese cuisine in the city centre.

Meanwhile, Étoile Bistro on the lower ground floor offers an eclectic menu that embodies major parts of Europe. This is the perfect spot to grab some delicious pastries, indulge in homemade meals, and knock back some craft beers after a hard day’s work.

The KL skyline looks amazing at night, and one of the best places to drink in the vibrant city’s energy is Sky51, an entire floor dedicated to fine dining, creative cocktails, and unrivalled views.

Featured here is Blue, the rooftop lounge where you can chill with friends while sipping handcrafted drinks. A staircase leads to an open-air deck for you to capture amazing shots for the Gram.

For those who really want to paint the town red, book the upper deck to host a private party.

If you prefer a quiet, private, yet exquisite dining affair, Sabayon is the place to be. Offering contemporary European cuisine, the dramatic high ceilings with accents of copper and bronze are as much a feast for the eyes as the food for your discerning palate.

All this feasting will inevitably lead to one thought: how should you shed those unwanted kgs? EQ’s modern and fully equipped gym has everything you need to sweat out your previous night’s indulgence.

From curved treadmills to weights, you will find yourself working those abs and glutes in no time at all.

Once you are done, head over to Sanctum Wellness for a massage session, or soak under the sun by the outdoor pool on the same level. There is an outdoor jacuzzi nestled in the corner for a truly refreshing experience as water jets provide your back with a healing massage.

Other health facilities include a Himalayan salt sauna that helps you detoxify and clear your respiratory passages; an aromatherapy steam bath to improve blood circulation; and – what would most probably enthrall many – a tropical monsoon shower.

True to its name, the latter comprises three stages to simulate monsoons in Malaysia. It has been specially preprogrammed to make you feel as though you were walking under a starry night.

Then the heavens open, beginning with a light drizzle before moving on to a misty spray, ending with a heavy torrent.

All in all, from the start to the end of your stay, EQ lives up to its reputation as a five-star establishment.

Service is impeccable at all levels, and whether you are here for a staycation or a business trip, you are assured of an experience to remember.
