PETALING JAYA:
It was a joyful get-together 53 years in the making for former students of Convent Peel Road in Kuala Lumpur (SMK Convent Jalan Peel today), who celebrated their joint 70th birthdays and class reunion earlier this month.

The cohort of 46 students from the Class of 1971 were joined by their ex-teacher, Liu Hwoong Chiew, at a hotel café in Bandar Utama here to reminisce about their school days and rekindle old friendships.

Many of the classmates had not seen each other since leaving high school, while some of them made the journey home from as far as the United Kingdom, the US, Australia and New Zealand to be part of the festivities. Name tags pinned upon their blouses helped some of them recognise others.

Highlights of the occasion include the 70th birthday cake-cutting ceremony, an impromptu speech by Liu, lucky draws, and a group photograph taken in the garden area of the café.

For Evelyn WK Chan, the day was one of happiness and nostalgia, “filled with love, laughter and cherished memories”.

“Making new friends and remembering old ones, recognising the value of staying connected with friends and family – this is something we should treasure in our lives,” she told FMT Lifestyle.

Event co-organiser Wong Foong Lin added that there had been great excitement among the classmates, who are of all races and backgrounds, in trying to identify one another.

“Many of us remembered little things, acts of kindness when we were young. Everyone arrived feeling a little nervous but left with so much joy,” she concluded.
