PARIS:
After reboots of “Magnum PI” “Hawaii Five-0” and “MacGyver,” it’s now time for “Little House on the Prairie” to return to the spotlight.

Best known for its TV adaptation starring Michael Landon, the Laura Ingalls Wilder book saga is getting a new lease on life from Netflix.

This latest announcement is yet another example of the trend for turning out new versions of “old school” sagas.

Hollywood continues to bank on “old school” sagas. This time, Netflix has decided to launch a new adaptation of the novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder, known as the “Little House” series.

“’Little House on the Prairie’ has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story,” said Jinny Howe, vice president of drama series for Netflix.

At the helm of the new series, Rebecca Sonnenshine (“The Boys,” “The Vampire Diaries”) will take the reins as showrunner: “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old. They inspired me to become a writer and filmmaker, and I am honoured and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.”

The original series, launched in 1974 on NBC, ran for over 200 episodes, ending in 1983. It told the story of the Ingalls, a family of 19th-century farmers and pioneers who settled in the small Minnesota town of Plum Creek.

The programme became one of the most popular in the world, firing up the careers of Michael Landon, the famous Charles Ingalls, and Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura.

More than 50 years after its arrival on television, the drama series is still among the most watched streaming dramas worldwide.

According to the latest Nielsen study, “Little House on the Prairie” established itself as the most-watched long-running “legacy” series in 2024, totalling 13.25 billion minutes viewed on the Peacock streaming platform.

The new adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books will be “part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West,” according to Netflix.
