PARIS:
Cinema’s most famous singleton has sealed a successful big-screen comeback.

The fourth and final instalment of the “Bridget Jones” movie franchise scored the best opening weekend ever for a romantic comedy in the UK and Ireland, grossing over £11 million.

British and Irish audiences are definitely mad about this particular girl. “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy,” released on Feb 14, has certainly found its audience.

In the first four days of its release, the latest sequel to the cult romantic comedy grossed over £11.8 million ($14.8 million, or just over €14 million), at the British and Irish box offices, according to Box Office Mojo.

This fine start puts the fourth movie adaptation of Helen Fielding’s books at the top of the list of best cinematic debuts for a romantic comedy in UK history, as widely reported by UK media.

At the same time, the film has managed to outperform its predecessors. The second film, “Bridget Jones: The Age of Reason,” released in 2004, held the previous record for the best launch for a romantic comedy in the UK and Ireland, with grosses of £10 million.

Bridget Jones’ latest adventures attracted more curious viewers than the launch of “Oppenheimer.” According to box-office figures, “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” outperformed Universal’s hit on its opening weekend.

But this should not be to the displeasure of the Hollywood studio distributing the British comedy, since “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” claims Universal’s 11th biggest opening of all time.

Despite competition from Marvel’s latest “Captain America: Brave New World,” the single mother in search of love accounted for 45% of UK box-office takings over the weekend, notes the Guardian.

The resounding success of “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” in theatres contributes to the current wave of successful big-screen comebacks being made by various midlife female actors.
