There are many positive reviews about Datang Sitok Café in Shah Alam, an eatery that specialises in Laksa Sarawak.

So being a food reviewer and true-blue lover of this delicious dish from East Malaysia, it was time to test out the online reviews by giving this restaurant a try.

Cafe Datang Sitok is located in Seksyen 7 directly next to Unisel, or north of UiTM. It is a no-frills kind of restaurant with next to no interior décor that you would consider as outstanding in any way.

There are the everyday plastic chairs and tables, some fans for comfort, and hawker stalls at which your food is cooked.

The owners of the restaurant appear to be a couple. The woman, who is also the main cook, is from Sarawak.

The menu consists of slightly over a dozen different dishes, with the majority being rice dishes. Whatever the case, Laksa Sarawak is the star here.

There are three varieties of Laksa Sarawak sold here – normal, Pattaya and the “super special”.

The “super special” variation is cooked with big-head river prawns but unfortunately due to the MCO, there has been a drastically short supply of these prawns.

The laksa came with all the usual ingredients – shredded chicken, bean sprouts, thick mee hoon, prawns, coriander, shredded omelette, fish cake slices and sambal with calamansi.

The fish cake is an additional ingredient that isn’t traditionally included in Laksa Sarawak, but in this case, it didn’t spoil the dish in any way.

The Pattaya version is interesting because of how innovative it is. This dish is essentially Laksa Sarawak, this time wrapped with a thin layer of omelette, taking a page from Nasi Pattaya that comes served in exactly the same way.

More importantly, both these variations of Laksa Sarawak pass the taste test with flying colours.

Both dishes were well-flavoured and well cooked. If anything, the broth would have benefitted from being a little thicker in consistency. The sambal was particularly good and rather potent.

If you’re here, you must try their cucur udang as well. Each serving comes with two pretty good-sized prawn fritters that hit all the right spots – it’s crunchy and rather delicious, especially when enjoyed with the slightly sweetened sambal that is served as the condiment.

This is definitely a restaurant worth paying a second (or third) visit to, even if it’s only to sample all the other offerings on their menu.
