There are several types of peanut candies available in Malaysia. The most common variety is perhaps the kind you can find in Ipoh, with hard candied sugar and big, chunky peanuts.
The other type consists of crushed peanuts and sugar packed into a cylindrical shape about 5-7cm tall, known as “kong ‘th’ng” in Penang.
As far as “kong th’ng” goes, many places offer them as is, but if you head to Weld Quay on Penang island and look for Mr Khoon’s titbits stall, you’ll find one that comes with special popiah skin.
The role of popiah skin is two fold – it serves as a handy wrapper for the peanut candy so you don’t make a mess of your shirt while savouring them; and more importantly, it complements the taste of sweet peanut candy with a hint of saltiness, as well as a nice change in texture.
It is, in short, simply lovely. If you find yourself in Georgetown, do keep a lookout for this sweet treat.
Happy food hunting!
