PETALING JAYA:
Many believe baked vegan desserts are bound to taste bland, failing short of the buttery, decadent flavours of non-vegan versions.

The good news is that vegan food can be just as, if not more delicious, as proven by the heavenly baked goodies at VickedGood.

Co-founded by Sheila Philip, 62, and Sita Lakshmi, 47 in March last year, VickedGood is a charming vegan bakery in Metropolitan Square, Damansara Perdana.

Formerly in the IT industry, Philip took up baking in honour of her late husband, who according to her, was a really good cook and baker.

In 2014, she founded “For Goodness Cakes”, a café in Bangsar that served comfort food until the pandemic forced her to close shop for good.

Sita, a vegetarian since young who turned vegan two years ago, operated two cafes in Cameron Highlands, which have also since closed.

So it made good sense that these two long-time friends become business partners as well.

“She’s very practical, whereas I’m the creative type. We both drive each other nuts,” said Sita, laughing.

“But in a good way, because I wouldn’t be able to do this without her; we complement each other,” chimed Philip.

Well known for their cakes and cupcakes, they have been getting rave reviews from both vegans and non-vegans in Malaysia and as far off as Singapore.

“There was this child who was intolerant to both eggs and dairy, and her face lit up with joy when her dad said she could have anything she wanted from the store,” recalled Philip, when asked of her favourite memories.

The Belgian chocolate cake and cupcakes are the bestsellers, with the Berry Rose Pistachio cake close behind.

There are also sourdough breads, pizzas, buns, croissants, brownies, scones, cookies, trail mix and granolas to satisfy your every craving.

And don’t forget the spreads – nut butters, fruit jams and kaya, alongside dairy-free flavoured yoghurts.

“A lot of our ingredients are made in-house as it’s quite a challenge to get vegan ingredients here, as compared to places like the US, Europe or Australia, where there are plenty of good quality products at affordable prices,” said Sita.

Those who want sugar-free, gluten-free, keto-friendly bakes, as well as customised cakes can also get them here.

Starting out as a central bakery that catered to other cafés and businesses, they opened for dine-in in February after many customers requested it.

The afternoon tea set in particular is a big hit. Featuring two sets of nine different items, the portions are generous enough for two to four people.

Every set includes shortbread cookies as well as “regular” and cranberry scones. The scones are served with non-dairy whipping cream and a delightful cherry tomato jam that tastes just like cherries.

The remaining six items are the customer’s personal picks.

The mushroom rendang croissant, filled with Mushroom Lah’s rendang, is a match made in heaven, leaving a lingering taste of lemongrass and buttery pastry flakes long after you’re done.

The red velvet and carrot walnut cupcakes on the other hand are rich, moist and addictive, while the hazelnut brownies practically melt in your mouth.

For those who prefer savoury snacks, the pesto and cheese sandwiches are an absolute must. All sets come with tea or coffee.

One of their latest additions to the menu are the sourdough pizzas.

“The Ham-less Hawaiian” pizza is served with vegan ham, while the “Say Cheeze!” pizza oozes with delicious vegan cheese made of cashew, coconut and nutritional yeast.

One can also opt to have the “Hey Pesto” and “Manic Mushroom” versions, the latter made with eryngii and shiitake mushrooms.

Should you be interested in vegan baking, why not sign up for their baking classes which includes cake decorating as well.

The duo is proud that their baked goods are loved by Malaysians from all walks of life.

“Our aim is to show that vegan desserts can look beautiful and taste great, and this will also help those who are transitioning into veganism,” said Sita.

“We want all non-vegans to say: ‘Hey, let’s go to VickedGood, not because it’s vegan but because it tastes good!’ added Philip.
