PETALING JAYA:
It’s a hot Friday afternoon and you are out and about during your lunch break, wondering where to grab a bite. Given that you’re in the heart of Petaling Jaya, lunching at a restaurant is an option, but the thought of hunting for a parking spot is a real turn-off.

As you drive down Jalan 14/29 in PJ’s Section 14, you spot a white food truck parked by the side of the road but think nothing of it. However, if you’re a PJ local, you’re likely familiar with this burger stall, especially since it has been operating in the area for decades now.

Jackson’s Burger is a household name to many living in the area. It has likely become part of some residents’ childhood memories, since the stall has been a regular sight since 1973. It is run by two elderly folks.

Han Ah Juan, 70, sometimes mans the stall alone, but on this day, he is assisted by his dear wife, Chong Sau Foon.

Open for just a few hours every day, the couple work tirelessly to serve their ever-loyal base of customers. In fact, there is barely an idle moment for the two as customers drop by throughout the afternoon.

As to be expected of a simple burger stall, there is not much in terms of variety – just four types of burgers in fact. These consist of the ever-popular chicken burger, beef burger, fillet-o-fish and the classic hot dog.

The first two cost a reasonable RM5.00, the fillet-o-fish RM7.00 while the hot dog is the cheapest at RM3.50.

Some customers stay in their cars as they bark out their orders, while others take the opportunity to stretch their legs a little while waiting for their orders to be ready. Some grab a seat on the few plastic chairs available.

Either way, it is quite the sight to behold as the husband-and-wife team get to work almost immediately, tongs and spatulas at the ready.

As one might reckon, roadside burgers are hardly the healthiest food in town, but there is something delightfully sinful about watching slabs of butter melt, then simmer on the hot grill as they await the flat, round patties then the burger buns that follow. And when the eggs start to sizzle, your mouth will start to water.

It also helps that the patties are not the usual cheap and frozen store-bought fare and as you will discover, the price is certainly worth the taste. Simple but tasty is what best describes the no-frills burgers here. Even so, you will feel pleasantly satisfied after your meal.

The chicken burger is flavourful, and the filet-o-fish had a crispy touch to it; the perfectly toasted buns also complement their respective patties.

There is a distinct aroma to these burgers that is hard to beat, and thankfully, there is just the right amount of sauce rather than a flood of the stuff that overwhelms the patty and makes a mess in your hands.

The hot dog also makes for a fine meal; it really is the definition of no-frills and makes for the perfect quick bite.

Speaking to FMT, Han explained that he was inspired to open his own burger stall after working at his brother’s during his youth.

“The number of burgers I sell each day varies greatly, but on a good day, especially on holidays, I can easily sell over a hundred.”

Judging by the number of cars stopping by to place their orders, this couple aren’t going to hang up their aprons any time soon.
