KUALA LUMPUR- Pasta is comfort food for many, loved by both children and adults. Versatile and tasty, it is easily adapted to suit one’s personal preferences in flavour and texture, and is lip-smacking even as a vegetarian option.
One restaurant specialising in pasta has become a household name among residents in the area due to their great tasting dishes, generous portions and affordable pricing.
Yes, Basil Pasta House has gained quite a loyal following over the years since opening in 2014.
Even on weekdays, long queues form outside well before the peak hours of lunch and dinner. With more than 30 pasta options, it’s no wonder why.
Operations manager Sharon Tang, 34, owns the restaurant along with her husband and brother-in-law.

With a background in fine dining, Tang said her husband Alven Tan insisted on using only the highest quality ingredients in their food.
“We slowly worked our way up through perseverance, and over time we gained some regular customers when they realised they were getting good value for the low price they were paying.
“We’ve even been asked if the chef’s from Italy,” she chuckled.
When the pandemic hit and dining in was no longer allowed, they like most other restaurants at the time, resorted to Plan B – delivery. “Thankfully, our regular customers were still supportive of our business during that tough period,” Tang said.
FMT visited the restaurant recently and sampled some of their best-sellers, like the Tuscan Seafood Stew. Packed full of fresh mussels, prawns and squid rings drenched in a tomato-based broth, this flavourful appetiser was a thrill on the taste buds.

Another must-try is the cheese-baked Italian meatball spaghetti with red wine tomato sauce. The baked pork meatballs topped with mozzarella make for a winning combo and perfectly complement the red wine tomato sauce.
For those who prefer their sauces thick and creamy, opt for the classic egg sauce carbonara pasta. This scrumptious option has crispy pork bacon bits and button mushrooms serenading the pasta of your choice. Finished with a soft-boiled egg and a drizzle of aromatic truffle oil, you’ll be in seventh heaven.

Now one not-so-common pasta dish that’s delicious all the same, is Pesto Genovese. Tossed in a base of Genovese-style pesto of blanched basil and parmesan, its flavour is further enhanced with slabs of salty pork bacon. It comes to you with a sprinkling of pine nuts for an extra bite.
No Italian meal is quite complete without dessert and the people at Basil Pasta House know this only too well.

The classic tiramisu is a must. An assembly of espresso-dipped sponge fingers, sweet (but not too sweet) cream cheese and a dusting of strawberry and dark chocolate powder, it is served in a dainty see-through cup.
There’s also a private dining space upstairs for those who wish to enjoy a chill dinner with wine.
“We love pasta ourselves, so we want to spread the same love to our customers through our food,” Tang said, “We believe that if we put out good food, there will surely be people who’d appreciate it as well.”
