The human brain loves routine. Mental health experts advise people to wake up and go to bed at roughly the same time every day simply because routine is healing for the mind and body.

A low-stress and scheduled morning routine can give you the energy you need to tackle the day no matter how challenging it may turn out to be.

Developing a morning routine that works for you and sticking to it can be tough, especially if you’re not used to having one.

However, without a morning routine, you may very well find your willpower wilting as you plod through the day, making zoning out with Netflix the most desirable form of escapism.

Yet, it is “tests” like these, that make the benefits of establishing a morning routine seem all the more worthwhile.

Why develop a routine?

A routine frees you from wearing out your brain by having to make too many decisions so early in the day. Routines are also an effective way to get the most out of your day.

If you’ve been feeling like you’re not in control of your life but changing your lifestyle sounds too overwhelming, then a simple morning routine could be the best way to get you back on track.

Ring twice

Try setting two alarms for the morning on your phone. The first should ring a half hour before the second. Try your best not to use your phone till the second alarm rings.

At first, it will be strange not to check your favourite news site or scroll through social media. But, the peace of easing into your day will soon become a pleasure.

The half-hour before your second alarm rings will allow you to fully wake up and settle into a calm mood before the rush and bustle of daily life sweeps you up.

Make time to hydrate

The one piece of advice you’ve probably heard to death is to drink water. But people often grossly underestimate just how much they should drink and end up closer to dehydration instead.

Starting your day off with a tall glass of water can make a big difference in your energy levels. Rehydrating after a long night’s sleep will perk you up and make you feel refreshed.

Set self-care tasks

There are people who, just by brushing their teeth, find that they are ready to tackle the day. But others need way more time – or a different activity – to feel physically ready to step out the door.

Just staying longer in the shower or incorporating a skincare routine could make a world of difference in how you start your day.

Taking just 10 minutes every day to cleanse, tone, and massage a UV moisturiser into your face can help you feel more in control. Your skin will love you for it too.

Slow steady movements

Err… exercising while sleepy?? Yes! Exercise does not have to include a costume change and sweating profusely under the sun.

A simple stretching routine can be enough to get your muscles warmed up. Enjoying the feeling of being active may even lead to an evening walk, and or a bicycle ride over the weekend.

Prioritise breakfast

Spread a mildly spicy sambal on toast, add an egg, and you have a tasty breakfast that’s easy to fix. Overnight oats make for a filling meal as well offering you all the fibre you need to power through your day.

Cut fruit and store in containers over the weekend so it’s easy to open and enjoy without any fuss on a weekday morning. Dried fruits or cacao nibs can make cereal more fun too.

However simple, breakfast can help your energy reserves last longer.

Lastly, before you leave the house, do one thing that makes you smile. It will remind you that any stress that comes your way is transitory. Be it watching a funny cat video or playing Wordle, taking just five minutes to relax helps start your day on a happier, stress-free note.

So, here’s to brighter, happier days simply by establishing an easy morning routine.
