Given the ongoing popularity of online shopping, there’s no better time to get immersed in the world of e-commerce, either by starting your own business or taking on a position in an existing company.
To help you on your way, here are some of the most popular jobs in e-commerce available in Malaysia, including the skills required and how much you can expect to get paid. Don’t miss part two of this article tomorrow.
1. Web developer
Most online stores and platforms come with a website, the design, aesthetic and functionality of which play a huge role in the customer’s overall shopping experience. If your website is hard to navigate, slow, or visually unappealing, customers are not likely to stick around to place an order.
For this reason, behind every successful e-commerce business is an outstanding web developer.
Web developers are often required to have a bachelor’s degree in web development or a related field. Candidates should clearly have knowledge in programming and web design, and will need to be familiar with software and processes such as JavaScript, CSS, and HTML.
Web developers should ideally be team players who perform well under stress. The average monthly salary is RM7,000, and up to as high as RM10,000 if you’re very skilled and experienced. Beginners can expect to be paid about RM3,000.
2. Business analyst
If you like numbers, then this is the right job for you. Crucial for every company, business analysts track data and advise on how the business should progress by increasing profits and sales. Other duties include financial modelling, forecasting, and reporting insights.
You would need to at least have a bachelor’s degree in management, business studies, or IT. Related experience is preferred but not always necessary. You will also need to be familiar with spreadsheet software such as Excel.
The average salary for this position is RM6,000, and up to RM10,000 if you advance in the role.

3. Project manager
The perfect job for natural-born leaders, project managers overlook the team and its activities, assign roles and responsibilities, and measure the progress of any given venture – all of which involves a lot of verbal communication. In some companies, they interact with customers to make sure they are happy with the business’ products or services.
You should have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, though this isn’t always mandatory. Most companies prefer experienced project managers who also possess excellent communication and organisational skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and management apps such as Basecamp, Asana, ProofHub and others is crucial.
E-commerce project managers can expect to earn an average of RM6,000 monthly, and up to RM10,000. Beginners might start with a lower salary of about RM4,000.
4. Customer-service rep
Customer satisfaction is what makes or breaks a business. If your clientele has inquiries, complaints or problems, they turn to the customer-service representative, who needs to be in constant communication through email and/or social-media messages. They help customers with their orders, follow up on issues, and make sure they’re satisfied overall.
Dealing with people isn’t always easy, so most businesses prefer for their customer-service rep to have previous working experience. You also need to be a good communicator – which includes excellent verbal and written skills – and be well-organised. Fluency in more than one language or dialect is a big plus.
The average salary for a customer-service rap is RM4,000 a month, though this varies depending on your location and expertise.

5. Order clerk
Order clerks, as the title implies, are responsible for processing orders for products or services offered by the business. They look after customers’ information such as shipping details and receipts, and may also be responsible for updating clients about shipping dates for possible delays.
They prepare and ship out orders, and are often in charge of filing paperwork.
To be an order clerk, you need to at least have completed secondary school. You would also need to be incredibly organised, have knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar software, and be a great and effective communicator.
Having previous working experience is preferred, though not always required, and you can expect a salary upwards of RM3,000 a month.
