PETALING JAYA: A wave of Sarawakian pride and patriotism swept across social media as netizens and politicians from the state celebrated Sarawak Day.

July 22, 1963, is significant to the people of Sarawak as it marked the first day of self-governance of the former British Crown colony, with many viewing the date as Sarawak’s Independence Day.

Today, many Sarawakians took to social media to celebrate Sarawak Day and show their love for their homeland through messages, artworks and even a video.

State Minister for Local Government Dr Sim Kui Hian uploaded a video explaining the significance of the date, while PBB’s federal minister Rohani Abdul Karim took to Facebook to wish Sarawakians.

Sarawak Opposition Leader Baru Bian congratulated Chief Minister Adenan Satem for having the courage to give the day its due recognition.

The PKR Sarawak chief said they were united with the state government in ensuring that the devolution of powers to the state became a reality.

Sarawak DAP chief and Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen said all Sarawakians were proud to belong to the state and wanted what was best for its people.

In line with this, Chong said government policies should give more protection and opportunities to the common people of Sarawak.

Many netizens also uploaded artworks bearing the Kingdom of Sarawak flag, used in 1963, and the motto “Dum Spiro Spero”, which is Latin for “While I breathe, I hope”.

Yasmin Zaini said “Happy Independence Day lovely Sarawak, I love you”.

Dannie Marcus V, meanwhile said that his patriotic heart beat red, yellow and black — the colours of the Sarawak flag.

“Happy 53rd Independence Day Sarawak, May God Bless us all and our country,” he posted.

In April this year, Adenan declared that July 22 would be an annual public holiday in the state to commemorate Sarawak Day.
