PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has put its Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT) on standby after three crocodiles were sighted at the Kuching Waterfront.

Apart from the Kuching Waterfront, SFC deputy general manager Oswald Braken Tisen said 18 other areas in the state had been identified as Crocodile Removal Zones including the Miri Waterfront, Damai in Santubong and Bako National Park, the Borneo Post Online reported.

He explained that some of the areas identified have become breeding grounds for the reptiles especially the Bako and Santubong rivers where large crocodiles have been sighted.

The latest sighting was near Kampung Rayu, where a four-metre adult male crocodile inadvertently swam into a trap set by the SWAT some two weeks ago. Owing to the sheer size of the reptile, the team struggled for about two hours before the crocodile could be transferred to the Matang Wildlife Centre, away from human populated areas.

Samri Adeng, 32, from Kampung Rayu, said villagers had spotted the massive crocodile for many months in the popular picnic spot. He also said they were now relieved that it has been relocated.

Oswald said the area, less than 50 metres away from the village, was also a popular bathing place for the villagers.

“The crocodile might have moved upstream after it faced a territorial challenge from other dominant crocodiles and ended up here,” he said.

He also told the public it was dangerous to throw waste into the river, especially rotten food as it may give the crocodiles there the impression it was feeding time.
