PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has claimed that many people would be happy to see him dressed in the orange-coloured lockup uniform, often worn by those arrested for alleged graft in the country.

“This is where it looks like it’s headed. If the police conduct an investigation, I might have to wear that orange attire and then many people will be satisfied,” the PPBM chairman said in a video released by the party today.

The 92-year-old was referring to allegations against him following a remark he made in referring to Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Bugis roots at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) “Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy” rally here on Oct 14.

Mahathir, who is also PH chairman, said the desire among many of his detractors to have him investigated appeared to be ultimately about wanting to see him get arrested.

“Since I have been active in fighting against Najib, many people have been eager to see me in orange garb with the word ‘lockup’,” he said.

Meanwhile, his lawyer Hanif Khatri Abdulla said Mahathir would give his full cooperation to the police.

He said Mahathir had been questioned by the police four times in the past year and had assisted investigators as required by the law.

“He is ready to be questioned by investigators without compromising his right to clarify the matter to the court if charged,” Hanif told FMT today.
