Guan Eng said he would make an exception and debate with Wee if the MCA man contests in Bagan, where Guan Eng is currently the MP.
He had previously said that he, as the top leader of DAP, would only debate MCA president Liow Tiong Lai.
Today, he continued to question why Liow was so unwilling to debate with him.
“If Wee is really that desperate to debate, I will give one exception to him. In the next general election, stand in Bagan, since the tunnel will pass through Bagan Ajam.
“Let the people decide. Then I will debate you. But this is only for Wee Ka Siong, if he comes to Bagan.
“If you want to debate with me, make sure you are the president first,” he said at a press conference today.
Guan Eng was asked to comment on whether he would accept Wee’s invitation to attend the forum in Bagan tonight.
Wee had invited both Guan Eng and his father Lim Kit Siang to the forum, titled “Political talk on Penang’s truth”. Both DAP leaders are listed as “unconfirmed special guests” in the poster inviting the public to the forum.
Last week, Guan Eng challenged Liow to a debate on state fund 1MDB and the Penang undersea tunnel project, saying it was for the sake of national interest.
“Let’s see if he is as brave as (ex-MCA president) Chua Soi Lek who dared to debate me,” he said.
The tunnel project continues to be a source of contention, with both Kit Siang and Wee’s cabinet colleague Abdul Rahman Dahlan joining the fray as well.
Kit Siang claimed that Rahman, who is Barisan Nasional (BN) strategic communications director, had revealed himself as the hand behind Umno’s “ninja assassin” Wee.
He accused Rahman of providing the MCA deputy president with the script for the “fictitious RM20 billion Penang undersea tunnel scandal”.
Rahman, on the other hand, said that using silly names like “ninja assassin” against Wee was unbecoming of a respected elder politician.
He added that the veteran DAP leader should take his son’s place if Guan Eng was afraid of facing Wee in the Bagan forum.
The infrastructure project came under renewed scrutiny by BN following a fresh probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Both the state government and BN have stoked the issue, which was a hotly debated topic in Penang in 2013 and 2014.
The 7.2km undersea tunnel will connect George Town’s Pangkor Road and Bagan Ajam in Butterworth. Work on it is scheduled to begin in 2023.
The “three main roads” (formerly three paired roads) stretch from Air Itam to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway (5.7km), Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang (10.53km), and Jalan Pangkor-Gurney Drive junction to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway (4.1km).
