Nufam wants the government to investigate suspicions of hanky panky in the purchase of Boeing planes by Malaysia Airlines Bhd.

PETALING JAYA:
The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) will ask the government to investigate suspicions of hanky panky in the purchase of Boeing planes by Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB).

The union said in a media statement that it raised questions on the matter with the previous government but did not get a response.

The call for the probe would be included in a list of requests to be submitted to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s office in the next few days, it added.

Last September, then prime minister Najib Razak told US President Donald Trump in Washington that MAB would buy 25 Boeing 737 jets and eight of the firm’s 787 Dreamliners. Twenty-five more 737s were slated for purchase in the near future.

Nufam said the purchases would cost nearly RM50 billion and alleged that MAB did not have the funds. It is keen to find out whether the money would come from MAB parent Khazanah Nasional and whether it will use any portion of the RM6 billion the government disbursed to finance the retrenchment of the airline’s workers in 2015.

Another item in Nufam’s list of requests is a call for the establishment of a royal commission to investigate the 2014 disappearance of Flight MH370. The Boeing 777-200ER, with 239 people on board, went missing en route to Beijing from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Nufam’s statement noted that there had yet to be a report explaining what happened to the plane.

“We believe that under Tun Mahathir’s new administration many things can be revealed to the public,” it said.

The statement also urged the government to ensure that the new transport minister would be a person with good knowledge of the aviation industry.

“He must be seen capable to manage the legacy problems of the national carrier and to help resolve some of the outstanding issues raised by the union,” it said.

It also said Nufam was confident that the Mahathir administration could improve current aviation laws.
