He noted that acting Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said that all quarters should respect the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe against Najib, as long as it was conducted “within the appropriate hours”.
“If this rule had been strictly observed, Teoh Beng Hock would not have died at the Selangor MACC premises in Shah Alam on July 16, 2009, and still be awaiting justice nearly nine years later – the reason why the Teoh Beng Hock case, like many other cases of injustices resulting in death, should be re-opened for justice to be finally done,” he said.
Teoh, who was a journalist and a political aide to DAP assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, 2009, having fallen from a window of the MACC office in Shah Alam after being taken there for questioning the night before.
Lim also asked why PAS was rushing to the defence of former prime minister Najib Razak in investigations into the 1MDB fiasco, especially as most Umno leaders were remaining silent.
Lim, the Iskandar Puteri MP, was commenting on the criticism of newly appointed MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull by PAS lawyer Wan Zainuddin Wan Musa for revealing details related to the 1MDB investigation in 2015.
Wan Zainuddin said Shukri’s remarks were prejudicial to Najib, as they had been made on the same day the former Umno president had his statement recorded by the MACC.
“The statement shouldn’t be released openly because it will bring about the perception that there was political interference in the case before this,” Wan Zainuddin said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Lim said although the reason the PAS leadership was being “so enamoured” of Najib’s “kleptocratic premiership” had yet to be revealed, Malaysians would not forget that its president Abdul Hadi Awang had been hoping that PAS would be the “kingmaker” to prop up Najib, if the May 9 polls had resulted in a hung Parliament.
Lim said apart from Zahid, there had been “thunderous silence” from other Umno leaders such as vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein and youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin on the 1MDB scandal and Najib’s “global kleptocracy”.
“Shukri’s tell-all press conference was quite unorthodox, but in the extraordinary circumstances of the scale of the criminality and moral turpitude of the 1MDB scandal, suborning national institutions and destroying public confidence in them, and staining and disgracing the international reputation of the nation, I fully support Shukri’s unorthodox action,” he said.
