PEKAN:
Former Umno president Najib Razak and his son Mohd Nizar have today won uncontested as the Pekan Umno chief and the Pekan Umno Youth chief respectively.

Nizar replaces Shahruddin Ahmad who has reached the age limit for the leadership of the Umno Youth wing

Nizar, 40, vowed to rejuvenate the party after its shock defeat in the May 9 polls.

“I can sense the strong support and the fighting spirit of the Umno leadership. There was also a capacity crowd in the hall where the Pekan Umno Youth delegates meeting was held,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

“They are committed to prove that Umno is still relevant. What is needed now is to get rid of the arrogance, money politics and all things negative to woo back the youth,” Nizar said in his speech.

Some 500 members from the division’s Youth wing attended the delegates meeting today to elect new office bearers.

Nizar said it was critical for Umno to now become a strong opposition.

“I appeal to members and leaders, let us unite because our struggle is in the name of a party that champions Islam,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bernama quoted Shahruddin as saying that Najib remained popular in Pekan despite Umno’s defeat in the elections.

“He is not a factor for the general election defeat. We believe he is a clean leader who is still loved by the people.”
