South Korean soju brand Jinro was the world’s most popular spirit brand of 2017

Thirsty South Koreans tipped back 76 million nine-liter cases of Jinro soju, making it the world’s most popular alcoholic drink of 2017 by volume.

In the latest report out of the International Wine and Spirits Research (IWSR) group out of the UK, Jinro maintained its standing as the world’s biggest spirit brand for the second year in a row, with a comfortable margin separating it from its closest rival: Jinro outperforms the second most popular spirit, Thailand’s Ruang Khao by 44 million cases.

The Thai brand is a white, sugar cane-based spirit popular among Thai laborers.

Rounding out the podium is Officer’s Choice, a whisky made in India that is also the world’s No. 1 whisky brand.

Overall, a scan of the top 10 spirits reveals that domestic Asian brands make up the lion’s share of the ranking, with three Indian whiskies and three soju brands taking up more than half the spots.

The first global brand to crack the list is Smirnoff vodka, which sits at No. 6.

Meanwhile, the most represented category on the top 100 list is whisky, with 29 brands, 15 of which are Indian whiskies.

After whisky is vodka, with 19 brands.

Here were the top 10 most popular spirit brands of 2017, according to the IWSR:

4. Emperador, Brandy
5. McDowell’s, Indian whisky
6. Smirnoff, vodka
7. Chum Churum, soju
8. Hong Tong, other spirits
9. Imperial Blue, Indian whisky
10. Good Day Soju, soju
