PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Najib Razak today hit out at the finance ministry for making contradicting statements on the sales and services tax (SST).

In a Facebook post, he referred to Tony Pua’s statement that the prices of goods would go down after SST, comparing it to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s remarks yesterday that he never said prices would go down with the reintroduction of the tax.

Pua, who is Lim’s political secretary in the ministry, had made the remarks in the Dewan Rakyat in August.

“Their communication strategy is great: different person, different story.

“Just like the mistake with the decimal point, I think our finance ministry is confused over the SST,” Najib said, referring to Lim’s announcement in August that the trust account where money for goods and services tax (GST) refunds was deposited only had RM148.6 million, not RM1.48 billion as earlier announced. Lim said the mistake was due to a ministry official who had misplaced a decimal point.

In his Facebook post, Najib also said the people were suffering with the SST due to the rising cost of living.

He said the new government couldn’t collect enough revenue after abolishing the GST, and that he feared more taxes would be introduced.

“Let’s ask ourselves, can we feel the benefits of switching from GST to SST?

“In all this, we can see how comfortable Pakatan Harapan leaders are in their offices, going from place to place and enjoying all sorts of facilities, forgetting the people just as they’ve forgotten their manifesto.”
