Shahidan freed of molest charge

Court grants former minister a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.

KANGAR:
Former minister Shahidan Kassim has been freed of a charge of molesting an underage girl last year, with the court giving him a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.

The Arau MP was charged under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

The former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department had strongly denied the accusation.

The girl lodged a police report on the matter but later withdrew it. Her father reportedly said the issue had been amicably resolved.

However, Shahidan was charged in November last year for assaulting the 15-year-old busker, by holding her shoulder and her left hand in a vehicle in October.

The hearing began yesterday and the Sessions Court in Kangar heard the testimonies of two witnesses, namely the manager of the DSSK Buskers group and the wife of one of its members.

It was reported that the decision to discharge Shahidan was delivered in chambers by Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad after the victim withdrew her report.

Outside the court, Shahidan expressed relief that truth has prevailed and thanked those who supported him after he was hauled up to court.

Utusan Malaysia reported him as saying that what was important now was that the matter was settled amicably after the teenager retracted her report and decided not to pursue the case as it was a misunderstanding.

“Many had made assumptions even before the court decided on the matter,” he was quoted by the Malay daily as saying.
