PETALING JAYA: UK-based global higher education surveyor Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has pushed Universiti Malaya 17 spots to number 70 in its annual university ranking.

UM also retained its position among the top 20 universities in Asia, according to the QS World University Rankings 2020.

American and British universities continued to dominate the top spots, led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Two Singapore universities, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore, missed the top 10 by one spot, retaining their 11th place.

Universities are evaluated based on six criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

This is the second global university survey this year showing UM in a higher position.

In May, it became the first local university to make it to the top 40 Asian universities compiled by Times Higher Education, moving up to 38th from 46th last year.
