Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu) referred to what he called “fast track” divorce counters in the state.
“You can settle a divorce case in six hours,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
“Anyone who asks for divorce can get it. If a wife says she is not happy with her husband, she is allowed a divorce,” he said, drawing laughter from other MPs.
Earlier, Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh said Selangor recorded the highest number of divorce cases among all states, followed by Johor.
She said Selangor recorded 8,794 divorces among Muslim couples and 2,068 divorces among non-Muslims. In Johor, there were 4,441 cases among Muslims and 1,526 among non-Muslims.
She said reasons for divorce included lack of understanding, unfaithful spouses and interference from in-laws.
Jalaluddin said the government should introduce marriage courses for non-Muslims to reduce divorce cases.
“If more young couples divorce, it will destroy the country as the family institutions weaken,” he added.
