The swearing-in of Muhyiddin Yassin as the country’s eighth prime minister today has raised questions as to the composition of his Cabinet and whether Umno members, several of whom are being charged in court for corruption, would be given positions of power.
Muhyiddin’s new coalition government, called Perikatan Nasional, is expected to consist of MPs from PPBM, Umno and PAS.
Stating that the Cabinet members have yet to be decided, Hadi said that it was unfair to sling accusations of corruption at members of the new government as the members of the Pakatan Harapan coalition had also faced similar claims themselves.
“The most important thing is saving the country from the political crisis,” he said of the week-long stalemate which saw Malaysia without a working government.
“If you want to accuse leaders of being linked to corruption, PH also has leaders whose cases have been stopped from going to court.
“They have been released just like that,” he added during a press conference at the party’s headquarters here.
PAS was part of the Barisan Nasional federal government from 1974 to 1977.
Outlining its support for Muhyiddin, Hadi said he hoped the federal government would focus on revitalising the economy, decreasing income inequality and improving education standards.
The party president also said it was important for Sabah and Sarawak to enjoy the same level of development as West Malaysia.
He also said PAS urged all Malaysians to work together to maintain peace and racial unity, calling for the government to “act fairly to all citizens, regardless of race, religion and political beliefs”.
