Record high 1,240 Covid-19 cases, 7 deaths

There were 691 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 17,825.

PUTRAJAYA:
The health ministry has reported 1,240 Covid-19 cases and seven deaths in the past 24 hours.

In a press conference, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 691 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 17,825.

The seven deaths brings the toll to 236.

The seven deaths today involved four Malaysians and three foreigners, all of whom were from Sabah.

They were aged between 27 and 90, with three of them having a history of chronic health conditions.

Noor Hisham said there are 9,744 active cases in the country, with 94 receiving intensive care and 31 requiring respiratory assistance.

Only two out of the 1,240 cases reported today were imported cases, one from Russia and the other from Ukraine.

Sabah again recorded the highest increase in cases, with 927 infections, or 74.8% of the total cases.

A total of 511 were from existing clusters, of which 280 cases were close contacts and 136 were from other types of screening, while 30 were from the new Kapor cluster.

Noor Hisham said this increase was due to a higher number of active case detections being done in the state. This was on top of better logistics to transport the RTK Antigen and RT-PCR test samples for faster results.

Meanwhile, he said 194 cases were from the Klang Valley, of which 120 were from the new and existing clusters.

Noor Hisham also said 508 cases, or 41% of the total, were from prison clusters such as Kepayan (438), Seberang Perai (57) Benteng Lahad Datu (7), Tapah (4) and Tembok (1).

He said these cases were isolated from the surrounding communities and the areas continued to be placed under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO).

Selangor recorded the second highest number of cases again today, with 176, followed by Penang with 61.

The bulk of these came from existing clusters, while positive cases were also detected in close contact Covid-19 screenings, and other types of screening.

Negeri Sembilan reported 25 cases, Kuala Lumpur 17 and Perak eight (of which four were from a new prison cluster). Sarawak reported seven new cases while Labuan, Johor, Kedah, Terengganu and Melaka reported five or fewer cases each.
