In a statement, the ministry’s senior director for food safety and quality, Mohd Salim Dulatti, said the ministry took note of reports that the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) had recalled the “Meadows” brand bottled water imported from Malaysia.
Salim said the ministry was seeking further information from the SFA.
“But preliminary investigations show the factory involved has a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point certification and a Bottled Drinking Water Licence from the ministry,” he said.
On Friday, it was reported that Singapore authorities had ordered a recall of the bottled water after it was found to be contaminated with pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria usually found in faeces, soil, water and sewage.
The bacteria is known to cause infections in blood and pneumonia among humans, besides causing diseases in plants and animals.
Salim said the sale of bottled water must comply with the Food Act 1983. The preparation and sale of food products that contain poison or are detrimental to health can be punished with a fine of up to RM100,000 or a jail sentence of up to 10 years or both.
