877 arrested for MCO-related offences

PETALING JAYA:
Senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said 877 people were arrested by the police yesterday over movement control order-related offences.

In a statement, Ismail said 806 of them were issued compound fines and 71 remanded.

He said most of the offences were for participating in activities which made physical distancing difficult (253).

Among the other offences were crossing districts or states without permission (177), participating in activities at nightclubs and pubs (101) and failing to wear a face mask (98).

Meanwhile, 2,910 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 19,472 supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

The authorities also detained 45 undocumented migrants and five smugglers yesterday as part of the ongoing Op Benteng campaign.

They also confiscated eight vehicles.

Regarding the mandatory home quarantine, Ismail said 120,928 people who arrived through KLIA were screened for Covid-19 from July 24 to Feb 13 and were placed under quarantine.

Some 566 tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 114,643 have been allowed to return home.

Some 5,719 people are undergoing mandatory quarantine.
