2,998 Covid-19 cases, 22 deaths

The number of deaths have now passed the 1,000-mark.

The health ministry has reported 2,998 Covid-19 cases and 22 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The number of deaths have now passed the 1,000-mark.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 5,709 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 229,762.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 272,163.

There are 41,396 active cases with 231 patients being treated in intensive care and 115 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 22 deaths bring the number of fatalities to 1,005.

The new cases today involved 2,991 local infections and seven imported cases. Local cases comprised 1,578 Malaysians and 1,413 foreigners.

Selangor reported nearly half of the cases today with 1,382, while others that recorded three-digit infections comprised Johor (436), Negeri Sembilan (233), Kuala Lumpur (226) and Sarawak (200).

They were followed by Perak (99), Sabah (94), Penang (92), Terengganu (91), Kelantan (72), Kedah (36), Melaka (20), Pahang (14), Putrajaya (2) and Labuan (1). Perlis did not report any infections today.

There were 103 cases from prisons and detention centres, most of which came from the Tembok Pengkalan Chepa (48), Tembok Bendera (22) and Tembok Tapah (12) clusters.

The 22 who died today comprised 21 Malaysians and one foreigner, with the youngest aged 41 and the oldest a 100-year-old man from Selangor.

One of the deceased, a 73-year-old Malaysian man in Sarawak, was only found to be Covid-19 positive after his body was brought to the hospital, where he was then tested for the virus.

Three of the deceased did not have any history of existing medical conditions.
